Mission Statement

The mission of Asha is to work with the urban poor of Delhi, to bring about long term and sustainable transformation to their quality of life. Through a practical expression of the Christian values of faith, hope and love, we aim to provide holistic community based health care, environmental improvement and empowerment through educating, resourcing and encouraging the community to receive and enjoy their basic human rights.

Asha also aims to influence the lives of its international audience by sharing local practice, experience and vision and facilitating partnerships where awareness and association between different cultures can impact and change individuals globally.

Vision

Asha has helped to make vast improvements to the lives of many of Delhi's slum dwellers, regardless of their place of origin, culture or religious beliefs. However, there are over 1400 slums not yet in partnership with Asha, and millions of people still desperately in need.

Asha's aim is to create a situation where all slum dwellers will be free from the fear of eviction from their homes and able to play an active part in their community. Education and healthcare programmes will improve health and prevent the spread of disease. Well-nourished children will attend school and have all the opportunities that they deserve, regardless of their gender. Empowerment training for the inhabitants will mean that they can negotiate with government departments to gain access to safe water, covered drains and other basic needs.

Asha believes that nobody should have to live in poverty and its programmes have been developed to ensure that once communities have been empowered and motivated to bring about change, those changes will be sustainable.
