Income generation scheme for slum women

Asha has devised income generation schemes for the women in the slums. Following training by Asha, the women use their newly discovered skills to make beautiful scarves, bags, purses and greetings cards and Asha ensures that they receive a fair price for each item. The women buy the raw materials themselves and can work from home, making a significant contribution to their household income.

Potential for growth 

Any items sold will increase the success of the initiative and mean that more women in Asha slums get the chance to make an income from their talents. The women will be able to train others within their communities the same skills and the business can grow rapidly.

My mother-in-law didn't want me to work but then she moved back to the village. I joined Asha's Mahila Mandal and my husband understood why. I can make money through making cards and other products for Asha to sell; I have learnt new skills and have a lot more knowledge. If people can't get their child admitted to school, or if they are sick, or if they can open a bank account, I can help them with all these things.
