Aberdeen Team complete the Asha Centre at Mayapuri

Posted: 28/03/2007

After 2 packed weeks in India including a trip to Agra and whitewater rafting on the Ganges, the team of 7 volunteers from the Christian Union at Aberdeen University have finished their work on the Mayapuri centre.

They painted a wonderful array of murals on the walls, some of which were requested by the children. They had asked for a picture of the Statue of Liberty, but as natives of Northern Ireland, Scotland and England, the team made sure that they also painted pictures of London buses, the Loch Ness Monster and the Giant's Causeway! The whole centre is now a joy to visit, with murals of a world map, the Jungle Book, the Taj Mahal and many others.

Yesterday the team dressed up in saris and kurtas to celebrate the opening of the new centre. They cut a red ribbon at the entrance to the centre and joined the Asha staff and Mayapuri's children and women in singing and dancing. The children are thrilled with the centre and everyone there was very sad to see the team go.

Thank you Asha

20 years ago, Shanti Vihar was unrecognisable - so much disease, mud and rubbish, and tiny huts for homes. Asha taught us how to prevent disease, and introduced us to officials so we could make improvements. Now it's such a nice place to live, nobody believes how bad it once was!

Usha, Shanti Vihar
