ASHA bids farewell to JAYABAI

Posted: 25/07/2008

Jayabai Carunia, the lady with a sweet smile and tender look, has officially retired after spending 15 long years in the service of the poor. Jayabai had been responsible for the Centre at Kalkaji for a long time.

Jayabai was born on 19th July 1950 in a small town in Tamil Nadu. She studied at Sarah Tucker High School and went on to do a Diploma in Lab Technician at Christian Medical College, Vellore. She also completed her Diploma in Pharmacy at J.S.S Pharmacy College in Ooty.

She had worked in different Hospitals before joining Asha in 1993 as a Lab Technician.  She was promoted to Programme Assistant in 2000 and worked in Kalkaji till her retirement.

It was a sad day for all the staff as we gathered together to bid Jayabai farewell. She was loved by all and words can never express how much she will be missed. Every staff member that spoke about her said one common thing, "she was a motherly figure for all and was always available when needed".

In her speech Jayabai mentioned how much she had learned from Asha. She used to be a shy woman but after coming to Asha she has become bold and extrovert.  She also mentioned that she used to be a sickly person but in her 15 years of service at Asha, she did not take even one day of sick leave, for which she praised God and thanked her colleagues for their prayers and support.

We thank God for her life and pray that she will continue to be a blessing for others. We wish her the best of luck.

Thank you Asha

My son died when he was a baby as he had diarrhoea and I didn't know the right way to treat him. I was depressed and ashamed, and wouldn't go out for a long time. Asha convinced me to join a women's group and to learn how to recognise and treat different health problems. Now, I've been a Community Health Volunteer for 16 years and only one other child has died from diarrhoea in that time - I'm determined to make sure there are no more.
