Asha congratulates new college students

Asha Congratulates the First Year College Students

Students from Asha slums in their first year at Delhi University were honoured at a function at Asha headquarters on September 22nd. All the students received gifts distributed by Asha staff members Kiran Gera and Alex Arnold and were individually applauded by their fellows. Asha Programme Officer Ramesh Pandey acted as MC for the event.

The students were boisterous and excited to be together after the first few months of college. This has been an eye-opening time for them, as the newness and independence of college life couldn’t be more of a change from growing up in the slums. The speed with which the young people have adapted is a credit to their confidence and determination to use this time to build a strong future for themselves.

Events like this are important as they reinforce the camaraderie among the students, who are an important support system for each other at college. The presence of the Asha staff for support and advice is also very valued by the students and their families. Without the help of Asha and Asha supporters, very few of these students would have gained admission to college or even had the courage to try.

Thank you Asha

We had been working with Asha to improve our slum for many years, but our homes were destroyed as the government needed the land. Asha helped us to get land allocated somewhere new and now, 4 years later, our area has water supplies, electricity, schools and healthcare.
