It was indeed a memorable week for the Bal Mandal members of all the centres of Asha. They had organised a special campaign for a week on different issues relating to their activities. They have been taking up all these activities throughout the year but gave it a special focus in this week.
The activities were planned on a daily basis and all the centres took up the same activity on a particular day. Before getting on with the activities all children gathered at the centres and the Team Leaders briefed them about the day's task.
On Monday, the day was set aside to go around in the slums and check the weights of under-five children, inspect their growth chart by checking the yellow card and the Mac band. They also reminded the parents about the immunization schedules.

Tuesday was the day for Education campaign. Their main task for the day was to go and identify the school drop out children and talk to them and their parents about the importance of education. They also encouraged these children to join the Bal Mandals.

On Wednesday, the children visited the elderly people who are covered under the Care for Elderly Programme and helped them with their works and also spoke to them to find out their health problems. They brought them to the centre and provided them with milk and eggs. They showed their care, love and affection by being with them.

Thursday, the children organised a sanitation drive. They cleaned, changed the water and added kerosene to water coolers to prevent breeding of mosquitoes. They also made sure that there was no stagnant water in the area. The children made sure that each family keeps a dustbin to put their waste in.

On Friday, the children swept the lanes, cleaned the drains and discouraged people, especially children, from defecating in the open.

The children cared for the environment and it was clearly visible in the interest they showed on Saturday when the day was dedicated to planting plants and flowers in the pots.

The children were very happy that they were able to create so much of awareness in one week. When they went in groups, the impact was much more than when they went individually.
Three cheers for the children!

My own parents married me off at the age of 13 so I had no education. Asha gave me the training and equipment to earn money and care for my children. I’m not dependent on my husband or sons and I’m saving for the future as well.
