Ballymena Team at Asha

Posted: 23/03/2010

A team of 16 builders, teachers, pharmacists, electricians, and managers came all the way from Ballymena, Northern Ireland to Asha to spend eleven days beautifying centers at Trilokpuri, Mayapuri, Savda Ghevra and Asha Polyclinic in R.K.Puram. Though they are professionals in their own field, the feeling of helping out the poor and down trodden is so intense among them that they preferred to work in the slums rather than sight seeing.

In Mayapuri the team built a pavement from the main gate to the entrance of the centre. This is a great relief for the staff, children and community as this area used to be flooded with water and garbage and the condition deteriorated during monsoon. In Trilokpuri the team did the flooring of the open area outside the centre. In Savda Ghevra five members of the team built a home for Mushtaq Ahmad. Although he has been living in Savda since four years, his condition was so poor that he could not even think of repairing his old dilapidated one-room accommodation, let alone build a proper house.

Thank you Asha

I used to drink all the time - all my money went on alcohol, and I was such a burden to my mother and 11 sisters. Asha put me in touch with Alcoholics Anonymous, and they have supported me so much. Now, I've taken a loan and run a small balloon factory - I'm earning money and happy for the first time in years.

Rangilal, Mayapuri
