Bulund Masjid Makeover

Posted: 15/11/2008

On Friday the 14th November, Sam Gibson and his team of six British volunteers from Lincoln, UK, proudly inaugurated the newly renovated Asha resource center nestled within the narrow, squalid lanes of Bulund Masjid in Seelampur. The roof of the center was fixed, along with other greatly needed maintenance work, and after a week of hard work the team had transformed the center outside and in with fresh paint on the walls and beautiful, colourful murals.

The inauguration drew a crowd of curious and appreciative locals as the team arrived in full Indian dress for the occasion. After the red ribbon was cut, to the rapturous applause of the gathered spectators, the team moved on to the main Asha center in Seelampur, with a group of youngsters from Bulund Masjid, to continue the celebrations.

After enjoying a wide range of theatrics and speeches from the children, Sam spoke of the team's unanimous appreciation for what had been a very rewarding visit. Dr. Kiran Martin, Asha's founder and director, also spoke, paying tribute to the team and their work. After participating in some vigorous Bollywood dancing, there was a tearful farewell for the team as they said goodbye to the children from Bulund Masjid, with whom they had become very well acquainted during their stay.

Thank you Asha

I joined Asha's women's group and they taught me a lot. I've been able to take a loan and build another room on my house - our family income has doubled, and I can even give my children some pocket money as well as saving for their education.
