Asha students in their third year and final year of college gathered at the Asha headquarters on Thursday 22nd January for a career counseling workshop. The students will become the first batch to graduate later this spring.
In addition to being the first children from their communities to attend university, the students' plans extend far beyond graduation. In India's competative job market, many employees need more than an undergraduate degree to secure a well paying job. All of the students plan to sit multiple exams and many will apply for masters degree programmes.

Asha is committed to helping the students achieve their dreams. At the workshop, programme officer Ramesh Pandey described all the options available to the students after graduation, from postgraduate programmes to civil service exams. He also explained the different types of jobs they will be able to get with these qualifications.
Then Dr Kiran Martin spoke to the students on their individual aspirations. She asked each one what they were interested in and recommended postgraduate courses and exams to them. Dr Martin counseled the students to take multiple exams and keep an open mind for all possibilities. 'You never know what life will bring,' she told them. She cautioned the children that their end of third year exams would be the hardest they had yet experienced in college. They would have to work very hard, but she promised that Asha would provide all possible assistance.

Over the last years I've learnt so much. Now I'm studying at Delhi University, and I'm hoping to be a journalist. Thanks to Asha, I have the kind of life and opportunities that most people in slums would never dream of.
