Career counselling update and Asha scholarships for gifted students

Posted: 02/06/2008

As part of Asha's career counselling programme, students who had attended the career-counselling session were given the task of visiting colleges to enquire about courses available and the admission procedures. Depending on the percentages they got in the qualifying exams, those who scored high percentage were advised to take up graduate courses and those who got lower marks were given the options to take vocational courses. From 2nd June, application forms for the prestigious Delhi University have been given out and Asha staff are helping students to complete them.

Many students, despite their humble backgrounds and inadequate study environment, scored very high percentages in their qualifying exams. They have big dreams and their quest for success can now be fulfilled with the help of educational loans from the banks who have been working hand in hand with Asha to make their dreams come true. The students have had two sessions with the counsellor and another one will be held soon after they get the college brochures. They were also guided by Asha in the meantime to help them take the right decisions. Two students have already been enrolled in ‘Arena', a 3-year multimedia course in animation with the help of loans from the banks.

Not only these students who are to set foot in colleges guided and oriented but a few students who scored very well in class 10 (pupils of the ages of 14-15) will be given scholarships by Asha to pursue their dreams. Mahesh from Dr Ambedkar Basti and Mahinder from Ekta Vihar scored an excellent 82% marks and above, and are keen to be an engineer and a doctor respectively. Asha is funding a scholarship for them to attend 2 years of coaching classes for the necessary subjects, which will give them a great chance to get through the entrance exams.

We look forward to watching the success of all these students over the coming months and years.

Thank you Asha

Before, there was no electricity, now there is. There were lots of problems before, but now things are much better. Our lives have changed because of Asha and I would like people to be able to learn as we have, to receive all the training that we have, and to be as confident about ourselves as we are.
