Diana Rogers and Jonathan Millard from St. Timothy's Church, Sheffield recently volunteered with Asha for 10 days - the second batch from the Church to have visited us here in Delhi. With a desire to get firsthand experience of slum life and a challenge to do something for these people, they traveled all the way from the UK and got to work shortly afterwards.

They painted and polished some murals in the Asha centre at Anna Nagar in central Delhi. They also interacted with children from the Bal Mandal and met the women of the Mahila Mandal. The women and children invited Diana and Jonathan to their homes overwhelming them with their generosity and simplicity. Even though most of the houses are just 25 square feet and where they cook, wash and sleep, community members still happily welcomed their guests and offered them whatever they had. They also had the opportunity to visit and witness the work of Asha in the slum at Kalkaji.

The children of Bal Mandal and the staff at Anna Nagar showed their gratitude to the members by organising a small function at the centre. Diana and Jonathan also made a donation that was raised before coming to Asha. We were extremely grateful to them for their time as well as their fundraising efforts.

I was suffering from Tuberculosis and my son couldn't cope with looking after me so he moved out. The TB got worse and I relapsed. An Asha community health volunteer noticed my illness, made sure I took my medicine and gave me rations of nutritious food. If Asha was not here I would have died by now.
