Dr Martin Finds Progress in Asha Slums

Kusumpur Pahadi slum has many of the usual serious social problems of a Delhi slum; alcoholism, unemployment and organised crime. But talk to the residents about their own recent activities and achievements and quite different picture will emerge. They will proudly describe the improvements they are making on their home, a brother expanding his business, a child in college and another studying for national board exams. The development has all been made possible thanks to the empowerment and expansion of opportunities made by Asha.

On a recent visit to Kusumpur, Dr Martin observed that it was incredible walking down a small lane and meeting a pregnant women accessing Asha clinics in one house, a member of Asha's local children's advocacy group in the next, a recipient of a small business loan in the next home and a child in college in the next. All of these families have been able to improve their circumstances in different ways through a connection to Asha. Furthermore, the presence of Asha in every home has brought the community closer together and contributed to collective development.

During her visit to Kusumpur and Tigri slums, Dr Martin met with Class 12 and college students. These students are preparing to take very important exams that will help determine their futures. Dr Martin asked them their methods of studying and what their future career plans. She also got feedback from them on what kind of further support they need from Asha. Jitender is studying History Honours at Deshbandhu College. He expressed his desire to study law after his graduation. Dr Martin promised that Asha would support him in his dream.

Dr Martin also met recipients of loans under Asha's financial inclusion scheme. One man, Ram Hans had been able to expand his shop and dramatically improve his income. She praised the fantastic work that the women's groups were doing in advocacy and environmental improvement. Both Tigri and Kusumpur were free of trash on the streets and dirty sewage, thanks to the community's efforts. Dr Martin said that maintaining a good relationship with the community, based on mutual respect and assistance, has shown that it is possible to achieve amazing things in Delhi's slums.

Thank you Asha

When Asha first came to my slum I didn't think that they could help - other organisations had been and gone. They stayed, and so I got involved and was trained as a community health volunteer. Now I have more confidence, I help to make changes in my community and I take pride in being able to help others.
