Friday was an emotional day at Asha. Members of staff and nearly 30 children from the slums of Kalkaji, Tigri, Kanak Durga and Dr Ambedkar Basti gathered to thank Laura, James and Rob for their skill, time and patience over the last 5 months.

We were able to see the extent to which their efforts had paid off. Children whose school classrooms are not always equipped with tables and chairs stepped up confidently to speak into a microphone - whilst also being videoed! - and gave heartfelt messages of thanks for their teachers.
It was incredibly rewarding for everyone to see just how much the children had learnt. The children laughed at jokes made by the teachers as the three stood in turn to speak to their students and to praise them to the rest of the audience.
Dr Kiran Martin also spoke of her delight at the success of the programme, and of her admiration for the three young teachers. The children all chorused their agreement when asked if they'd continue to practise their English and promised to try and learn more.

We had been working with Asha to improve our slum for many years, but our homes were destroyed as the government needed the land. Asha helped us to get land allocated somewhere new and now, 4 years later, our area has water supplies, electricity, schools and healthcare.
