Fun and games at teachers' workshops

Posted: 25/06/2007

Over two days, 36 Asha staff involved in working with children attended workshops led by Dr Christine Burnett from Friends of Asha (Ireland) assisted by Shamita Tripathi. These educators had already been trained extensively in the topics they teach such as issues of child labour and health promotion. The focus of the day was therefore on how this material may be communicated to the children with maximum impact. Each day was interspersed with different games to demonstrate how important fun is in engaging young people in the vital messages Asha seeks to deliver. The importance of educating the whole child, intellectually, morally and spiritually was discussed in groups and a mission statement for Asha educators was devised.

Staff spent time reflecting on their experiences with children to date and how they could be more effective educators. The importance of issues such as non-verbal communication were discussed and communication styles analysed. The day ended with making brightly coloured masks festooned with feathers and sequins to show how we must project a lively and engaging personality in our work with children. Overall, staff were encouraged to value the key work they are doing to educate the whole child and to help them become responsible citizens.

Thank you Asha

I grew up in a slum area, but Asha helped me to understand the importance of education. I've worked hard in school for years, and Asha gave me books and extra tuition when I needed it. Now I'm in engineering college! It's a dream come true for me.
