Global Politics students from Japan visit Asha

Posted: 08/09/2007

On 7th September 2007 Asha welcomed 24 students from Hosei University on a visit led by Keiichi Ito. Asha was one of a number of organisations visited by the group as part of their course on global politics and this year's theme "Soft Power in International Society". The visit to Asha was organised by Yoko Yatsumi as a chance for the group to learn more about the conditions faced by the poor of Delhi and what Asha does to help.

The students were given a presentation and shown slides on all aspects of Asha's work. This was followed by a visit to Ekta Vihar, a nearby slum where Asha has been working for 18 years. The students met the Mahila Mandal (women's group) members and heard about how difficult their living conditions were before they got involved with Asha. The women told them several inspiring stories that highlight their independence and strength as a group, and then lead the students on a tour of the slum.

The visit ended with refreshments at the Asha Polyclinic where the students asked many questions raised by what they had seen.

Thank you Asha

I joined Asha's women's group and they taught me a lot. I've been able to take a loan and build another room on my house - our family income has doubled, and I can even give my children some pocket money as well as saving for their education.
