After many years of lobbying the local authorities, Asha's Mahila Mandal women's group of Ekta Vihar have succeeded in securing much needed improvements to local infrastructure. Asha has long supported the belief that by empowering women to become advocates for their rights and the rights of their communities, change can be brought to Delhi's slums.

Until recently the roads within Ekta Vihar have been in a terrible state of disrepair. Large potholes and poor drainage have created multiple problems for local residents, particularly during the monsoon season. Due to the constant pressure placed on the responsible authorities by Mahila Mandal women, work to resurface the road began this week.

When Asha representatives visited the area, the women were taking it in turns to supervise the construction in order to ensure the work was completed and quality maintained.

The best thing about the loan scheme is how quickly people have seen benefits, whether they are able to earn more or improve their homes...The direct relationship with the banks helps them a lot, and I'm glad to have been part of it.
