After many hours of tireless work by volunteers from Edinburgh University, Mahila Mandals and Bal Mandals, the Asha Health Centre in Seelampur Slum was inaugurated on Friday 8 August 2008

The nine volunteers from Edinburgh University visited Asha for two weeks. Their main focus during this time was the rejuvenation of the Seelampur Health Centre. Using their considerable artistic skills, the volunteers painted murals of popular children's characters in 3 of the Centre's 10 rooms. As a result of their efforts, the children section has been transformed.
The afternoon's celebrations began with Asha's Associate Director Freddy Martin overseeing a ribbon cutting at the entrance to the Health Centre. The 9 volunteers from Edinburgh University were welcomed with great joy by the children of the Seelampur Bal Mandal. The assembled guests were treated to brilliant dance performances by some of the children and heartfelt speeches from representatives of the Mahila Mandals and Bal Mandals. The volunteers then treated the audience to 2 song and dance routines of their own before presenting the Health Centre with a lovely painting and donation.
Equipped with a computer room, classrooms and a resource library, in addition to it's health monitoring facilities, those using the renewed Asha Seelampur Health Centre face a brightened future.

Since I’ve been involved with Asha I’ve learnt so much about health and how I can help my neighbours. I’ve also learnt to speak English, and I know how to use computers as well - I have a much better chance of getting a good job when I leave school.
