The start of 2007 saw a team from Restore (Peckham), a church in London, travel out for a week to work on an Asha project. The Restore church has been supporting the Sonia Gandhi Colony for a number of years and its members were keen to see the work of Asha first-hand.
The main task for the team was to help with the refurbishment of the community centre in Ekta Vihar and in particular, to design and paint a mural on the walls of the main hall and IT suite. The team wanted to ensure that the community of Ekta Vihar were directly involved in creating the mural in order to build a sense of ownership over the centre – the hall was painted with silhouettes of children, and both women and kids also helped paint brightly coloured kites and birds.

The team also enjoyed getting to know the children through interactive games, songs and craft activities, including face painting which the children particularly enjoyed.
The team also spent some time with the women’s and children’s groups in different slums. Through these visits, the team was able to build good relationships with key members of the community, including the members of the Bal Mandals and Mahila Mandals. The action packed week ended with a colourful celebration marking the inauguration of the Ekta Vihar centre.

We had been working with Asha to improve our slum for many years, but our homes were destroyed as the government needed the land. Asha helped us to get land allocated somewhere new and now, 4 years later, our area has water supplies, electricity, schools and healthcare.
