Rotary presents donation to Asha

Posted: 25/08/2008

A very special Rotary Club meeting was held at the Asha offices on Saturday 23 August, to inaugurate new medicines and equipment purchased with Rotary donations.  The meeting featured a talk from Dr Mrinal, a New York based nutritionist, who spoke about the need to address nutritional issues amongst slum dwellers. She also reported on a recent essay competition for children on the topic "India's current health care dilemma - malnutrition or obesity?" The results of the competition indicated that Indian children are concerned with the rate of malnutrition in India and the lack of sufficient health education. Asha has been working to combat malnutrition for 20 years through peer education and the work of our Community Health Volunteers. In that time there has been a dramatic decline in cases found in the areas where Asha works. In 2006-2007 for example, there were no deaths from malnutrition in the slums where Asha operates.

The meeting was followed by the official presentation of a range of new medicines and refrigerators donated to Asha Community Health Centres by the Rotary Club of Delhi, Southend.

The Rotarians were then invited to travel to the Asha Community Health Centre in Dr. Ambedkar Basti. The excursion allowed the Rotary members a first-hand insight into how their donations will be used to improve treatment at the Health Centre, as well as a glimpse into the lives of the local people. While at the Centre, the Rotarians were able to witness a nutrition education session conducted by a visiting specialist.

Rotary has been a valued supporter of Asha over a number of years and we look forward to working with them again on future projects.

Thank you Asha

The best thing about the loan scheme is how quickly people have seen benefits, whether they are able to earn more or improve their homes...The direct relationship with the banks helps them a lot, and I'm glad to have been part of it.
