Visitors from Tear Netherlands see Asha's work

Posted: 16/03/2007

On 15th March we were visited by 4 members of Tear Netherlands - Marnix Niemeijer, Erik Werkman, Gert van Leeuwen and Guido Bakker. They travelled with Asha staff to Mayapuri, a slum in an industrial area in the west of Delhi. There, they met with the Mahila Mandal (women's group) and heard about the improvements that have been made to the community's health, environment and self-esteem since beginning work with Asha eight years ago. Marnix spoke on behalf of the group at his delight in meeting such strong, empowered women who so obviously had the interests of the entire community at heart.

This was followed by a tour of the slum, where our visitors came across one of the children's group members. The young girl impressed everyone by confidently explaining how to make oral rehydration salts that can be used to treat anyone suffering from diarrhoea.

Following this, the group returned to the Asha headquarters where they were shown around the polyclinic and introduced to Dr Kiran Martin.

Thank you Asha

Getting involved with Asha was a turning point in my life. I became part of the women's group where I realised that there were other women like me, and we can be listened to and our views consulted. The confidence I gained has given me strength to help so many people.
