Workshop on Communication Skills

Posted: 02/08/2008

The Bal Mandal children in Zakhira had a wonderful time on 31st July when Nick Smith, a volunteer from Harvard University who has been teaching English in the slum, and Madhuri Martin, from DPS RK Puram, conducted a workshop on Communication Skills. All together 25 boys and girls attended the workshop.

Why do we communicate? What are the ways in which we communicate? Why is there a need for better communication? What is Verbal and Non-Verbal communication? How should we communicate with others? These are some of the important topics that were discussed during the session.

The games and skits in between the discussions made the session very interactive and easy for the children to understand and take an active part in it. These children have been learning English from different volunteers in the past few months and have improved a lot in their conversation skills, however they lacked confidence and appropriate ways to communicate. With this workshop, the children got to boost their skills, which only increased their desire to improve their abilities.

Thank you Asha

I was very ill and thin because my mother died and my father had TB. Asha staff took it in turns to look after me and gave me the right food to make me better. If they hadn't helped me, I would have died.
