Workshop - Preparing for College

Posted: 17/06/2008

Life will never be the same again for those children who have been admitted to different colleges of Delhi University. It's a dream come true for many of them who live in the dingy lanes of slum colonies. They would never have thought of going to college if not for the career counseling that Asha had organised. The counselor had a hard time convincing some of them to apply for admission to college as most of them would look for a job after completing school so that they could support their families. They would not like to waste another 3 years attending colleges.

But after the series of counseling, as many as 32 students took admission in colleges and 13 students in professional courses such as Arena Multimedia, Air Hostess Academy and YWCA. Many are still in the process of getting admissions in ITI (Industrial Training Institute) for various diploma courses that will enable them to get better jobs.

On 8th July, six volunteers namely Nick Smith, Devin Smith, Madeleine Shapiro and Amar Grewal from Harvard University, Lolly Berger from Tufts University and Anurag Gumber from BITS Pilani organised a day's workshop for the students who will be attending colleges on the theme "Preparing for College".

The workshop started with icebreakers and an introduction of the workshop by Lolly and went on to touch on different topics like Value of Education by Madeleine, Self-worth and Coping with stress by Nick, College Experience by Anurag, Study Habits by Devin, Dress Code by Amar and Social Life by Lolly. Each presentation was followed by a group discussion that allowed the students to participate and clear their doubts and fears that they had in their minds about going to college.

With doubts and fears cleared, the students looked confident and ready to start their courses on 16th July 2008. We wish them great success for their futures.

Thank you Asha

The best thing about the loan scheme is how quickly people have seen benefits, whether they are able to earn more or improve their homes...The direct relationship with the banks helps them a lot, and I'm glad to have been part of it.
