Young volunteer makes big donation

Posted: 11/11/2008

One of our youngest ever volunteers, Charlie Weston, aged 9, from Sidcup, Kent, has shown that age is no barrier when it comes to helping the disadvantaged. Through a variety of fundraising activities, Charlie raised a very impressive sum, which she recently presented to Asha Director Dr Kiran Martin in New Delhi. Charlie visited as part of the New Generation Church team who worked with Asha in October.

Charlie's school class also prepared information posters about themselves for Charlie to give to children at the Asha Centres she visited. Charlie hoped that the slum children will reciprocate using the craft materials she brought with her.

Charlie's determination to help those less fortunate than herself has been inspiring to all who've met her.

Thank you Asha

My son died when he was a baby as he had diarrhoea and I didn't know the right way to treat him. I was depressed and ashamed, and wouldn't go out for a long time. Asha convinced me to join a women's group and to learn how to recognise and treat different health problems. Now, I've been a Community Health Volunteer for 16 years and only one other child has died from diarrhoea in that time - I'm determined to make sure there are no more.
