The 1st Asha UK Southwest Conference was a great success. On Saturday September 18th, Asha supporters from Bath, Yeovil, Taunton, Bathford, Wellington, London and beyond, gathered at The Gateway Church in Yeovil to hear the latest updates from Asha’s Delhi slum projects, listen to the experiences of those who have visited and learn more ways to be involved in the work of Asha.
Keynote speaker Dr Kiran Martin thanked the supporters for their dedication and commitment towards advancing the work of Asha and improving the lives of people in the Delhi slums. She shared some of the many ways lives and areas have been transformed through Asha programmes, from clean drains to small business loans to children in college.

Conference speakers included Dick Hogben and David Finch, both general practitioners as well as long-time Asha supporters. Dr Hogben described the opportunities for medical volunteering at Asha and medical education programmes he had conducted at Asha. Dr Finch, who is also the chair of Friends of Asha (GB), spoke about the training he had given for Doctors in Asha slum projects and the evaluation of Asha’s medical programme that he carried out earlier this year.
Other speakers included Sue Rees, who talked to the participants about fundraising ideas. This sparked off a lively exchange of different fundraising suggestions among those present. The Asha supporters were excited about sharing their approaches and discussing future possibilities to raise money. In addition, Mark Baines gave an update on the new Asha website and encouraged Asha supporters to use the new website features. And Julie Hogben described the opportunities and logistics involved in taking teams out to Asha.

Asha would like to thank Dick and Julie Hogben, Nigel and Sue Rees and everyone else who contributed to organizing the conference for all their hard work and to all the Asha supporters who came to take part. It was so wonderful that so many Asha supporters who had never met got to know each other, and it was inspiring and motivating to meet the people who share Asha’s vision and are part of the Asha family. Asha hopes that this conference is the first of many!

I’m now so keen to learn that I will sit and listen to doctors whenever I get the chance. I’m busy all the time, delivering babies, giving lectures and training volunteers.
