Dr Kiran Martin meets with the Prime Minister of New Zealand John Key

On Thursday 5th October, Dr Martin was very warmly received by New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key at a private meeting in Wellington. The Prime Minister had met Dr Martin and a group of Asha college students from Delhi's slums this past June and played an exciting exhibition cricket match with them. On that occasion, he also spoke to the children about their lives and the challenges they faced in their education.

We were extremely pleased that Dr Martin was accompanied at last week's private meeting with the Prime Minister by Mr Gary Agnew, Chairman of the Board of TEAR Fund New Zealand, Asha's longstanding partner. The continued support and immense commitment of TEAR Fund has enabled Asha to run long term successful programmes for the urban poor in Delhi, for which we are extremely grateful.

Asha would like to thank the Prime Minister for taking the time to meet with Dr Martin and welcoming her to New Zealand. We would also like to thank TEAR Fund New Zealand for their unwavering support and belief in Asha. And we are very grateful to HE Ms Jan Henderson and the New Zealand High Commission in Delhi for their assistance in organising this interaction and their wonderful association with Asha over many years.

Thank you Asha

The best thing about the loan scheme is how quickly people have seen benefits, whether they are able to earn more or improve their homes...The direct relationship with the banks helps them a lot, and I'm glad to have been part of it.
